Snapper Popper

Every year fishing is different and conditions and patterns change. Sometimes taking advantage of these changes and fishing for what is abundant right in front of you can make you enjoy the experience much more enjoyable.

Speaking of abundance the snapper population has been down in the salt ponds for the past 5 years. This year we have seen an increase in population, they can be found all over the salt pond back in Narragansett Bay, and other protected areas along RI's coast. You are allowed to keep three a day and are great table fair. They can also be great bait for striper and fluke.

We have seen some other warm water dwellers entering our area juvenile crevalle jack have been running with the snappers. We have also see small cobia in the salt ponds.

Fluke fishing has seen a pick up this past week with good numbers of fish and some decent sized ones. Local Fishing still seems to be producing the better bite. Customers have been fun catching them in the salt pond even though the majority are shorts. Tautog fishing is off to a great start with a great shallow water bite. Still a lot of by catch happening from scup to seabass.

Striper are starting to get out of there summer routine and are heading into the fall migration, ready to put on the feed. They are constantly moving and as the days get shorter and the nights get longer they will do the majority of there eating at night. Keep your eye out for mass bait movements sometimes the best of the fall run happens in September.

Funny fish have been around, there seems to be less Bonita then earlier in the month and some albie reports are starting to pop up. Off shore the tuna bite has been off and on with a majority of smaller fish. There has been a few bigger fish being caught though.
