Looking forward to seeing you all come by the shop for crabs Saturday morning. There should be a little lull in the waves around 8:30 ;-)

Well, it looks like Mother Nature has something else planned for us this weekend.

The first real nor'easter of the fall is moving in, and it is going to make getting out on the water pretty tough this weekend. We will be open if you're in the area and need to restock or just want to come in and chat fishing.

Surf fishing has been great this week and should continue to be very good as soon as fishable conditions return.

A gentle breeze from the heart... ignorant people call it a fart!

Striped Bass

The bass fishing has continued to pick up as we get further into September. There is plenty of bait around, and the fish are starting to spread out from the ponds and breachways to the beaches.

This is the time of year when you want to have a little bit of everything with you. Eels, plugs, bucktails, soft plastics, and topwater lures should all have a place in the bag.

The breachways have been producing well, especially around the moving water. Once this storm passes, I would keep an eye on the beaches as well. All this wind and rough water can push bait around and get the bass feeding.

The inlets should fish well during the storm, just stay safe!!

A good number of bluefish were around this week and some good size ones.

Tautog

The tog bite has been a little inconsistent, but we are getting closer to some of the better tog fishing of the year.

As the water starts to cool, more fish will begin moving into shallower water, and the bycatch should start to change.

The next few weeks should be great, especially once all this water clears up.

Bonito / False Albacore

The bonito and false albacore are around, and there have been some good-sized fish mixed in. Those who have gotten out this week have found some really good feeds.

The Albies have been getting close to shore, giving guys fishing from the beach a shot at them. Hopefully they stick around and stay close to shore after this weekend.

Lure of the Week – Atom Atomizer

The Atom Atomizer Topwater is a great lure to have when the bass and blues are pushing bait to the surface.

It has a large scooped face that throws a lot of water and makes plenty of noise. The flashy tail gives it some extra action and helps get the attention of fish from a distance.

This is a good lure when the fish are looking for a bigger meal.

Can be worked on top or retrieved just below the surface

This is definitely one to have ready for the fall bass and bluefish bite.

What Is a Nor'easter?

With a nor'easter heading our way this weekend, I figured it was a good time to talk about what exactly one is.

A nor'easter is a strong storm that develops along the East Coast. They are most common from the fall through the winter and get their name from the strong northeast winds that come with them.

These storms can bring some pretty nasty conditions to the coast, including:

Strong winds
Large waves
Heavy rain
Coastal flooding
Beach erosion
Power outages
Dangerous boating conditions

This weekend's storm is expected to bring strong northeast winds and rough seas to Southern New England. The National Weather Service currently has a Storm Warning in effect for Rhode Island Sound, with some gusts potentially reaching 50–60 knots in the region.

For us fishermen, the big thing to remember is that the weather doesn't just affect the weekend. A big storm like this can move a lot of water and bait around.

Once things settle down, it will be worth getting out there and seeing what changed.

Sometimes the best fishing happens right after the storm.

Get Ready Now

Check your drags. Replace old leaders. Sharpen hooks. Restock your small resin and epoxy jigs. Make sure you have your topwater plugs ready, along with bucktails, soft plastics, and teasers.

And don't forget the basics:

Check your rod guides.
Clean and lubricate your reels.
Check your leaders.
Retie questionable knots.
Replace rusty hooks.
Make sure your drag is working properly.
Have a few different baitfish imitations ready to go.

With this storm coming, it's also a good time to make sure your rain gear, boots, headlamp, and other foul-weather gear are ready to go.
